Gymnastics: GB calls held so Deer by tumbling quintet

FIVE Durham gymnasts are taking a tumble this week – all in the name of national glory.

Deerness Gymnastic Club quintet Rachel Davies, Matilda Hamilton, Georgia Clayton, Chloe Tindale and Steven Gilmore have been selected to represent Great Britain at an event in Sofia Bulgaria, which runs from today until Sunday.

Delighted Deerness Valley gymnastics coach Glen Wharton said: “Normally you are only lucky enough to have kids selected in ones or two at national level.

“To have five picked in one go is an amazing achievement.”

Not only that, but five members of the club’s younger members have also been selected for the Great Britain squad.

They are Alexandra Richardson, 10, from Consett, Millie Nesbitt 10, from Durham, Jonathan Morgan, 10, from Durham, Harvey Simpson, nine from Washington and Mae Heskett, 11, from Sunderland.

Wharton said: “We have been cited as the most improved club in the country by the national coach.

“This is an amazing start to 2009 for us, and with the World Championships coming up in November this year we are looking good to have some of our youngsters selected.

“We have just received a donation from Intra Health to help with the costs of the Bulgaria trip, as it is costing us £3,000 to send the kids over there.
