Private talks could halt Ushaw College closure (From The Northern Echo)

TALKS have begun that could save a 200-year-old Catholic seminary from closure.

Facing declining rolls and increasing financial problems, Ushaw College, near Durham City, ceased its commercial activities on December 31 and its St Cuthbert’s Seminary had seemed all but certain to close in June.

However, there are hopes that talks with an unnamed group could see the college’s training and educational work saved.

The current seminarians are still expected to transfer away from Ushaw this summer and college bosses are anxious not to raise hopes too high.
