This is a beautiful scenic circular walk starting from Deerness Gymnastics Academy and following local footpaths and the Deerness Valley Railway path. This walk is suitable for pushchairs.

Starts at

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, Valley View, Durham, County Durham, DH7 7LS

Route instructions

1] Leave the Gymnastics Centre and walk towards the main road. Turn left and walk along the path with the main road to your right. Walk for quite a distance passing houses on your left and crossing minor roads. After the football pitch on your left you should turn left to follow the public footpath sign.

2] Follow the footpath, please be aware the track may be muddy! Follow path as it bears right and follow until you reach a red gate, go past red gate and follow footpath as it bears left.

3] Follow path downhill then when you get to a cross roads in the path you should go right following the Bishop Auckland to Barnard Castle walkway. Walk for a short distance before bearing right following the cycle track.

4] Keep walking to under the green road bridge and keep following the path as it bears right ignoring the Brandon to Bishop Auckland route to your left.

5] Keep walking to pass under an old railway bridge and continue to follow footpath for a distance, just before you come to a seat on your right and steps to your left you should turn right.

6] Follow path towards main road, go through a kissing gate the when at road cross over and turn left, walk for a distance before returning to the gymnastics Academy.

Additional ‘Point of Interest’ information

A] The club has been running for over 30 years and has been based in the sports centre for 10 years. The club took over the running of the centre in October 2011 when it became Deerness Gymnastics Academy. There are over 400 children participating in gymnastics each week!

The club has recently had success at the 2012 Acrobatic World Championships in Florida where the Senior Men’s Group were crowned World Champions
