Durham Tumblers Triumphant at World Championship

Two tumblers from Deerness Gymnastics Academy have returned to the club with SILVER medals after competing in the 2013 Tumbling World Championships for Great Britain in Bulgaria.

Shanice Davidson from Washington took SILVER in the 13-14 girls age group and Rachel Davies from Langley Park took SILVER in 15-16 girls age group.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, head of tumbling, Glen Wharton was also selected as one of the team coaches. His vision has always been for Deerness Gymnastics Club to become one of the strongest clubs in the country and he has an absolute passion and determination for Tumbling Gymnastics.

“These were fantastic displays by our tumblers,” said Glen Wharton, head of tumbling. “I would have been really pleased to just make the finals however to bring back two World Championship SIlver medals is a great achievement for both Shanice and Rachel but also their coaches, families and also the club.

“Tumbling is a relatively new discipline for Deerness Gymnastics Academy but we have been able to achieve a lot in short amount of time and its a real achievement for the club to continue to represent and win medals for Great Britain at international level.

“We have started new tumbling recreational classes here at Deerness Gymnastics Academy and we hope this will inspire our younger and newer club members as we continue to  develop the club for both the local community as well as national and international gymnastics.”

The 2013 Trampoline, Tumbling & Double Mini Trampoline World and World Age Group Championships were held in Sofia, Bulgaria between 14 and 17 November. The Great Britain tumbling team has representatives from 11 different gymnastics clubs across the country and in total seven tumblers from Deerness represented Great Britain, making up a quarter of the whole squad.

The club took over the running of Deerness Gymnastics Academy last year, following the closure of Deerness Leisure Centre by Durham County Council, and is making gymnastics coaching available to all ages from novice to elite level.

Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which now has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty years, with over 100 international gymnasts with more than seventy World and European medallists, including four World and six European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.
