Deerness tumblers target national finals places in Sheffield – Sunderland Echo

NINETEEN young tumblers from Deerness Gymnastics Academy will compete in this weekend’s semi-finals of the National Development Programme Championships.

The North East youngsters won their place in the semi-final, where places in the national final are up for grabs, after taking either gold or silver in the regional championships in South Tyneside earlier this year.

Deerness have 10 regional gold medallists taking part, in Lucy Pinkney, Jenny Lawson, Noah Glanville, Ellie Cook, Cleo Watson, Rebecca Temperley, Lucia Woodhouse, Amy Jeff, Olivia McFarlane and Jessica Vaughan

Sol Cornwell, Sophie Watson, Harry Wharton, Melissa Overal, Rebecca Dixon, Darcey Garbutt, James Richardson, Charlotte March and Erin Stone all secured silvers.

Last year, eight Deerness tumblers represented the region at the national finals, eventually winning four gold medals.

“It’s great to be taking so many youngsters to a competition outside of this region. This will not only be great for the club and gymnastics at a national level but will also provide our youngsters with valuable competition experience against the best in the country”, said Glen Wharton, Deerness’s head of tumbling.

“Its a busy time for our gymnasts as we also have five tumblers competing for a place in the Age Group British Championships, which will be held in September, and recently Rachel Davies was selected to represent Great Britain in the forthcoming European Championships.”
