GB call for Deerness Academy tumbler (From Durham Times)

A DEERNESS GYMNASTICS ACADEMY tumbler will proudly represent her club and country next week as she competes for Great Britain in the Tumbling European Championships in Portugal.

Rachel Davies, 15, from Langley Park, is one of four girls from across the whole of the country selected for the GB tumbling junior girls team.

Last year, Rachel won a silver medal in the British Championships and a silver medal in the World Championships competing for Great Britain in the 15/16 age category.

In 2010 she was World Champion in the 11/12 girls tumbling age group and in 2012 won a team gold medal in the European Championships.

Rachel will compete in the 24th trampoline, tumbling and double mini trampoline European Championships in Guimares, Portugal, next week.

The event will include many countries from across Europe, with hundreds of the best tumblers taking part.

“This is great news for Rachel and the club and we all wish her the best of luck,”

said Glen Wharton, head of tumbling at the academy.

“Although she has represented Great Britain before there is a lot of competition across Europe in what is a growing discipline of gymnastics.

“Even though she is a very talented tumbler she will have to perform at her very best in the competition to achieve her goal of a medal.”

“Tumbling is a new discipline for our club but we have been able to achieve a lot in short amount of time and its a real achievement for the club to continue to represent Great Britain at international level.

“We have started new tumbling recreational classes and we hope this will inspire our younger and newer club members as we continue to develop the club for both the local community, as well as national and international gymnastics.”

The club took over the running of Deerness Gymnastics Academy in 2011, following the closure of Deerness Leisure Centre by Durham County Council, and is making gymnastics coaching available to all ages from novice to elite level.
