Gymnastic club may take over Deerness Valley Leisure Centre

April 23, 2011 Leave a comment

A GYMNASTICS club training aspiring Olympic stars could help take over its home leisure centre to save it from closure, it has emerged.

Leaders of Deerness Gymnastics Club, which has produced several national champions, have joined an action group to save Deerness leisure centre, in Ushaw Moor, near Durham.

The centre is one of six facing the axe under Durham County Council plans to save 1.3m a year.

The Deerness campaigners, who also include parish councillors, residents and centre users, hope to convince the council to spare its facility or – if that fails – to run it themselves as a social enterprise.

More than 150 people packed out a hall in the leisure centre on Saturday, as a public meeting was held to discuss its future.

The club also took part in the regional Prep Grade Competition, and three of its acro partnerships came away with gold medals.

Sue added: “We are delighted with the way things are going, but there is still a lot of hard work ahead.”

The self-funding club is planning to hold a massive international event at Temple Park later this year.

Trust presses on with council leisure centre buy-out (From The Northern Echo)

AN organisation hoping to save four North-East leisure centres threatened with closure has reaffirmed its position after scrutinising the accounts.

Spectrum Leisure and Management (Slam) said it can now draw up a “viable” business plan after Durham County Council opened the books.

The council is considering closing six leisure centres to save £1.3m a year, part of £400m cuts its needs to make over the next four years because of a reduction in central Government funding.

The community development trust hopes to take over the operation of leisure centres in Ferryhill, Sherburn, Coxhoe and Pity Me.

Deerness in Ushaw Moor and Glenholme in Crook are also facing closure.
