Deerness Tumblers Set for British Battle

19 tumblers from Deerness Gymnastics Academy are readying themselves for the British Championships this weekend and a feast of high quality non-stop gymnastics action.

The gymnasts best skills will be required in order to rise above the competition with high-flying somersaults and twists mixed with mind-blowing fast paced tumbling to seal the British titles at the British Championships that take place over the weekend 6/7th July at the LG Arena in Birmingham.

Gymnasts have battled through regional qualification events to claim their places at the most prestigious event of the year and have earned their right to fight for podium places and British glory. Deerness have the most competitors in the Championships, with 19 of the 111 tumblers coming from the Durham club.

“Tumbling is a relatively new discipline for our club but we have been able to achieve a lot in short amount of time and at last years British Championships we topped the medal table with 3 gold and 4 silver medals,” said Glen Wharton, head of tumbling. “Our tumblers and their coaches have worked really hard to develop their skills and its great to see so many qualifying for this event and we can’t wait to see them all in action”

Deerness Tumblers who have qualified for the national championships include:

  • 9/10 Girls: Mia Liddell, Lydia Overal, Lucia Woodhouse
  • 11/12 Girls: Sophie Allen, Lauren Husband, Amy Jeff, Cleo Watson
  • 11/12 Boys: Sam Stafford, David Richardson
  • 13/14 Girls: Shanice Davidson, Alexandra Richardson
  • 13/14 Boys: Jonathan Morgan
  • 15/16 Girls: Georgia Clayton, Rachel Davies, Matilda Hamilton
