JournalLive – News – Today’s News – Ram-raiders plough into Ushaw Moor Co-op in JCB

RAM-RAIDERS ploughed a mechanical digger into the wall of a supermarket in a failed attempt to seize a cash machine in the early hours of yesterday.

The would-be thieves rammed the Co-op store, in Broom Lane, Ushaw Moor, County Durham, with the heavy-duty construction digger in a bid to break down the wall to obtain the cash.

Before attempting the raid, robbers placed “homemade stingers”, metal spiked devices, on nearby roads and in other villages to delay the arrival of police.

Both a police car and a delivery van were damaged as a result of the spikes.

Armed response police were alerted to the robbery at around 4.20am when the store’s alarm sounded.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV footage.

Residents of the quiet and close-knit community woke up to see the stolen JCB in the road, surrounded by bricks and debris.

Graham Kirkup, who owns G & S News, on Broom Lane, said: “As I came down from Esh Winning to open up I saw the spikes in the road. My colleague saw a delivery van drive over the spikes and burst its tires.

“We immediately came in and looked at our CCTV. All we could see was the JCB ramming the front of the shop. It was going backwards and forwards into the shop.
